Paying Tickets

If you receive a parking/traffic violation, you have ten (10) days to appear at the Department of Public Safety, 30 Gilchrist Hall, during normal business hours and do one of the following:

  • Pay the penalty imposed
  • Make an appointment to present an oral appeal to the Appeals Committee
  • File a written appeal of the violation

If you do not pay the assessed fine, or initiate an appeal within ten (10) days following the issuance of a violation citation or the denial of an appeal, an additional penalty of seven dollars ($7.00) will be assessed (effective Monday, August 26, 2019). Unpaid tickets will be payroll deducted from employee's salary or placed on student U-bills.

Payment of violations cannot be payroll deducted or placed on the U-bill without the $7.00 penalty assessment.

Online Citation Payment

‌Pay your citation online

A UNI ID number or MyUNIverse account is not required to use the payment portal.

Please note: Citations sent to U-Bill or payroll cannot be paid online. If you plan to appeal the citation, or are in the process of doing so, do not pay the citation.

Ticket Appeals

Any ticket can be appealed within ten (10) days at the Department of Public Safety, 30 Gilchrist Hall, during normal business hours.  Appeals will be accepted in oral or written form by the Appeals Committee. Failure to appear at the appointed time on an oral appeal will result in denial of your appeal.

The Appeals Committee meets once a week to hear written and oral appeals. You will be notified by mail of the committee's decision on your appeal. The decision of the Appeals Committee is final, but may be heard de novo by the District Court as prescribed by law.

The Appeals Committee is made up of faculty, staff and students.

To appeal a citation online, go to our new Parking Portal. If you are not a current student, faculty and staff, you must create an account; follow the onscreen instructions.

Effective August 22, 2022, the Office of Public Safety implemented changes to the citation appeal process as approved by the Iowa Board of Regents.

Per the new regulations (Section 9.5):

9.5 Appeals

a. Upon being issued a parking/traffic violation, the violator shall appear within ten (10) calendar days at the Department of Public Safety, 30 Gilchrist Hall, during normal business hours and pay the penalty imposed or make an appeal to the Parking Appeals Committee.

b. Appeals will be accepted in oral or written form by the Parking Appeals Committee.  An online ticket appeal form can be found at parking.uni.edu.

c. Upon receipt of a parking appeal, parking staff will conduct an administrative review of the appeal to ensure it meets criteria for a valid appeal.

d. Once established criteria for an appeal is met, the appeal will go to the Parking Appeals Committee for consideration.  Once the Parking Appeals Committee makes a decision, the person who submitted the appeal will be informed of the decision.

e. Valid appeal criteria should provide evidence the parking violation was not committed or the parking infraction was due to circumstances beyond the driver’s control.

f. The following reasons will not be considered as valid for appealing a parking citation:

     i. Lack of knowledge of the parking rules and regulations.
ii. Vehicle was illegally parked for a short period of time.
iii. Other vehicles were similarly parked in an illegal fashion.
iv. No other parking area was available.
     v. Violator did not receive citations in the past for a similar infraction.
vi. Violator was late for class or an appointment.

Failure to appear for an oral appeal at the appointed time will result in denial of the appeal.
